Create Your Own Monarch Habitat
Milkweed-to-Monarch: There’s simply no overstating the importance of Milkweed (Asclepias) in every stage of the monarch butterfly’s life. For caterpillars, it’s their single source of food. When monarchs transform into butterflies, they rely on nectar from milkweed flowers for sustenance, and when it’s time to lay eggs, only milkweed will do. As the milkweed goes, so goes the monarch.
- How to Start: Even a 10' x 10' space, thoughtfully planted, can serve as a safe place for monarchs to land, lay eggs, and refuel. By planting milkweed and other native, drought-tolerant plants, you’re creating a life-sustaining way station for monarchs along their migration route.
- Community Impact: Habitat creation isn’t just limited to backyards. Public parks, schools, golf courses, corporate land, and private parcels are all ideal spaces for new habitats. We’re actively seeking partnerships with anyone interested in butterfly conservation, whether you're an individual or an organization. Native Monarchs can guide you in selecting the right plant mix, and we may even help design and install habitats. Check out our Butterfly & Pollinator Garden Planting Guide or contact us to discuss your conservation vision.
- Become a Seed Collector: Collecting and storing seeds from local milkweed and native plants is an easy, impactful way to contribute. Milkweed seeds can support more habitats and help replenish monarch-friendly areas across the region.
CAUTION: Plant with Care
When creating a monarch habitat, it’s essential to take a few precautions to ensure it truly benefits the butterflies.
- Use Native Milkweed: Only plant milkweed species that are native to your area. Non-native milkweeds can flower at times that disrupt monarch migration and may provide habitat for parasites (like Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, or OE) that are harmful to monarchs. Learn more about how to Grow Native Milkweed.
- Avoid Areas with Pesticides: Place monarch habitats away from areas that might be sprayed with pesticides and chemicals. Common pesticides like neonicotinoids can harm monarchs even at very low levels, and these chemicals can persist in plant tissues for a long time, posing ongoing risks to butterflies and other pollinators. Learn more about OE Parasite.
Together, we can create a future where monarchs not only survive but thrive. Let’s build a brighter future for these incredible butterflies and the beauty of nature. Join us today in creating a legacy of beauty, nature, and kindness!
